Overview

The Doctor of Education (EdD) is an internationally recognized research qualification for experienced educators and professionals who wish to gain and apply research techniques to advance their knowledge and expertise in educational research, practice, policy, leadership, and administration.

The Huddersfield EdD recruits from a wide variety of educational and professional contexts. Our EdD researchers have included Primary, Secondary and Further Education teachers; Higher Education tutors from Arts, Applied Science, and Social Science disciplines; senior leaders in education and administration; and professionals in education and training across a wide range of sectors including, police and social services.

For the EdD at the University of Huddersfield four taught modules are delivered over a period of one year. Research for the 50,000 word thesis begins after the successful completion of these four modules. The taught modules and supervision for the thesis are led by University of Huddersfield faculty.

Programme Structure

The EdD consists of four taught modules and a 50,000 word thesis. The programme in Hong Kong can be completed in four years

Taught Phase – Four modules completed in one year Research Phase – completed in three years.
  • Educational Research Theory And Methodology
  • Evaluating Research Fields And Designs
  • Data Collection And Analysis
  • Developing Research Proposals In Educational Enquiry. This is the completion of the Research Support Plan and the point of ethical approval for the research phase of the EdD.
Progression to the research phase is dependent on successful completion of the taught phase.

The EdD is a professional doctorate in education. This means suitable research topics should have an educational focus, though this can be broadly conceived. Previous areas of research of our EdD researchers have included, though are not limited to:

Admission

Entry Requirements

  1. Entry Qualifications

    • A relevant Master’s degree or equivalent; OR
    • A relevant Postgraduate Diploma or equivalent, a recognized professional qualification or equivalent relevant for the title award and a minimum of three years relevant postgraduate professional experience.
    • Two commendable Referee Reports.
    • A provisional research proposal of between 750-1000 words (plus bibliography). The proposal should explain the proposed area of interest, and include a rationale for the research topic, a literature review and suggested methodology for conducting the research.
    • The research topic will be reviewed for its suitability for doctoral level research and supervisory expertise within the School. The taught phase of the EdD may influence the research aims and interests of successful candidates, leading to developments in the research proposal prior to progression into the research phase.

    Applicants who do not meet the above requirements will be considered on their merits and professional experience, and in relation to the nature and scope of the proposed research topic. A candidate wishing to be admitted under this regulation must provide the names of two suitable persons who can be consulted concerning their academic attainment and fitness for research.

  2. English Requirements

    Applicants educated in a language other than English should have an IELTS 6.5 with no element below 6.0 or TOEFL equivalent.

Programme Fees

Total fees: HKD$270,000 (estimate based on 4 years of study)[+ Application Fee HK$250]

Year 1: Four equal installments of HK$30,000
Year 2 – Year 4: HK$25,000 per 6 months

Students should note that all fees are subject to review and may be changed by the University.
