2022 HKMA Quality Award Presentation Ceremony
Professor Joe Ngai JP, Chairman of Greater China, Mckinsey & Company, Serves as Guest of Honour

October 18, 2022

Introduced by The Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) in 1991, the HKMA annual Quality Award aims to give recognition to companies in Hong Kong which have made a lasting commitment to quality management and also to provide an opportunity for companies to share with one another their best practices. Professor Joe Ngai JP, Chairman of Greater China, McKinsey & Company served as the Guest of Honour of the occasion and delivered a keynote speech at the Award Presentation Ceremony held on Monday, 17 October 2022 at JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong.

The results of the 2022 HKMA Quality Award were announced by Dr Jacob Kam, Chairman of the Award Organizing Committee and Executive Committee and Council Member of HKMA. This year, a total of five companies were recognized according to a comprehensive set of judging criteria developed based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence Framework, which covers seven aspects, including Leadership; Strategy; Customers; Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management; Workforce; Operations; and Results. The Awards were presented by Professor Joe Ngai, Ir Alkin Wong, Mr S K Cheong, and Dr Y K Pang respectively.

Dr Y K Pang said: “Since the launch of The HKMA Quality Award in 1991, the Award has inspired many organizations to benchmark themselves against the very best in various industries, and to step up their improvement efforts; thereby achieving impressive enhancement in competitiveness, performance and business results.”

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited won the Grand Award. Dr Kam highlighted that “This company operates the world’s largest air cargo terminal, with a staggering capacity of up to 3.5 million tonnes of cargo a year. It is an industry trend-setter, delivering the highest levels of efficiency, reliability, security and customer service. With its world-class facilities, innovative process management, and proprietary technology, the company has earned numerous “world’s number one” accolades. Its success story is not only about the company, but also about Hong Kong as the world’s leading air cargo hub. Its achievement is well proven, winning the Grand Award not once, but twice!”

Professor Ngai said “I am glad that HKMA here is looking at the innovation and management. These are what we need.” He emphasized that innovation may not be easily accepted by everyone, but a leader should make courageous decision to make big moves towards business success. He also shared that instead of working hard, it is more effective to choose the right industry, geography, sector and segment to make your effort.

Going forward, the Award will continue to promote best practices in Total Quality Management as well as experience sharing among different companies.
