As project managers we need to continuously engage the support of senior directors and clients. And they are transfixed by the business outcomes and dollar value of what we’re delivering. This course shows you how this is measured, and how you can do it.

Who Should Attend

This course is for you if you are ready to:

  • Run projects where you can see and explain the big picture to major stakeholders
  • Gain the 360 of your projects through clear understanding of the ROI of business outcomes;
  • Communicate effectively with top management in the language of business impact and dlilars;
  • Transform your relationship with board members, C-level executives and clients through expressing your
    projects and programmes from a business perspective, and
  • Reinforce the confidence of your clients by having the numbers backed up by the facts.

Course Structure

We focus on simple, easy to understand methods, so you don’t need a financial background to accurately and logically calculate the ROI of your activities and report your results credibly, and the course is exercise driven so you can experience the skills you’ll need to use the methodology effectively. By the end of this introductory course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of calculating ROI
  • Appreciate the importance of ROI and be able to explain it to other senior management and executives;
  • See how an effective ROI Impact Study is conducted, and how to initiate and support one;
  • View your projects, programmes and initiatives from an ROI perspective, and
  • Make the case for measuring ROI in non-capitalised investments.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Methods and Methodologies for Value Why we MUST forecast and measure project outcomes, project selection criteria, supporting strategic decisions. Contemporary methods and methodologies for deriving project benefits and values, formulae for NPV, BCR and ROI. Exercise 1 – Choosing What and Choosing Why
Planning Your Approach Which projects to study, choosing the appropriate methodology, laying out our planning steps, identifying stakeholders, arranging resources. Predictive, post-implementation and post-maturity measurements. Exercise 2 – Planning the Process
Prospecting for Data Kinds of data, levels of data, data sources, what to measure, surveys and questionnaires, Likert and Guttman, how to get the data you need, obtaining further information, case studies. Survey fatigue and maximising responses. Exercise 3 – Obtaining the Right Data
Isolating What we Need Unrelated factors that affect results, correlation and causation, using control groups, analysing trend lines, estimation techniques, data conversion, credible sources. Exercise 4 – Plucking the Data from the Noise
Getting to the Bottom Line Unit of measure conversion, performance change calculation, dollar derivation obtaining project costs, calculation of BCR and ROI, other significant observations. Exercise 5 – Deriving the Data and the Dollars
Selling the Results we Get Producing readable reports, executives summaries and appendices, presenting the results to senior stakeholders, concluding with calls to action. Exercise 6 – Presenting your Business Case

Course Leader

Colin Millward

Colin has a 35-year corporate background implementing technology and financial systems projects in the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. He founded his company Knight Griffin Pte. Ltd. in Singapore in 2003, and through his brand RulesReimagined, Colin has provided top-level consulting and training in the past twenty years to bring a third-dimension and an external viewpoint to corporations and governments. He holds an MBA, PMP, CRP and is an accredited principal mediator.
