McDonald’s Hong Kong Excellence in Digital Innovation
Build the BEST leaders at McDonald’s! We describe ourselves as a learning organization that provides opportunity, nurtures talent, develops leaders,
and rewards achievement. With mobile phone being an essential item for most people in Hong Kong, online training would be a solution to fulfill our
training goals and reach our people anytime, anywhere. McDonald’s is committed to offering learning solutions and resources to enable our people to
build their BEST capabilities. In 2020, we redesigned our training tools to make digital learning accessible to all employees, among them over 15,000 are
active learners.
McDonald’s great digital learning experience means “bringing learning to where employees are.” It refers to a change in the training and learning way that
leverages digital tools for career development anytime, anywhere.
Training team embarked on this journey to the Progressive Digital Learning Experience (PDLE) programme in December 2019. The platform is in an
employee-centric design with 3 major elements:
An all-in-one platform to receive latest training materials
Train & learn anytime, anywhere
Personalized career development path
According to the crew and managers opinion survey, they expected that the training materials can be transformed from text-based to video format. In
8-months’ time, training representatives developed 110 videos internally to replace the existing manuals. Crew and managers could watch the videos
to learn and receive the latest updates. It sped up communications to all frontline staff members. Managers could follow up on the completion rate and
evaluations through exams and reports effectively.
Training team applied creative ideas to promote the newly developed digital learning tools with FUN elements.
1. Training team organized a Train-the-trainer workshop for the mid-management group of Operations, and partnered with them to provide strong
support to our frontline users in Q4 2020. A knowledge quiz competition was organized for them to refresh the back-to-basic operational knowledge
through this programme.
2. Training team produced short videos to explain the digital transformation in an interesting way. The Operations leaders participated as supporting
actors, attracting crew and managers to watch the training videos and experience the learning platform.
“Easy to use. Simple to manage.” Crew and managers were excited about the digital transformation of training experience. The working committee
is now expanding the support to cross-department training. In the future, the digital training experience can further support different aspects of our
business and cater to the needs of different departments.
The digital training platform brings overall benefits to us, including:
1. 25% of training time can be saved in every station training;
2. Increased effectiveness helps the saving of 1450+ manager hours on system administration in every quarter;
3. It protects our environment. 200,000+ pieces of paper consumption and the printing cost were avoided in the market.

A well-developed programme provided a clear career path for staff personal development by making good use of technologies. The objectives set were
targeted and focused to cope with the challenges of the pandemic and the pressing needs in using a digital way of training.
A brand new training format with customized digital contents and gamification elements which catered to the needs of younger generation well. Project
implementation was well captured, with development stages involving front-line crew and managers; good engagement of top management and users
via various initiatives.
Positive training outcomes that could meet the training objectives with great results and effectiveness. All in all, a creative and fun employee-centric
online training platform which provided a comprehensive solution to support the learning requirements of the employees anytime and anywhere.
